No final de "um século de desonra" (século XVIII), quatro milhões de colonos, essencialmente britânicos, expulsaram os índios para o Ocidente e tomaram posse das terras. A vontade de Londres em controlar e obrigaras suas colônias americanas a pagarem impostos, que atingiram um progresso econômico formidável, provocando a revolta dos colonos contra a Inglaterra assim ganhando a guerra e proclamando a sua independência em 4 de Julho de 1776. Foi a primeira vez na História que uma colônia se emancipou.
Em 1787, os Estados americanos elaboram a Constituição dos Estados Unidos, caracterizada pela separação dos poderes, a soberania popular e o federalismo. O primeiro presidente dos Estados Unidos, George Washington anunciou as grandes linhas de uma política externa baseada no isolamento.
A própria história política dos Estados Unidos da América, nomeando à sua liberdade do poderio inglês, fez nascer por toda a parte sentimentos comuns, ou seja, o desejo de colônias desprenderem-se dos poderosos colonizadores. A partir desta data surge um grande conjunto de ideais revolucionários por toda a parte da terra, destacando-se a Revolução Liberal Francesa de 1789 e a revolução da Independência Brasil, em 1820.
A partir deste momento, os Estados Unidos da América tornaram-se numa potência mundial, sem antecessores, após as grandes lutas mundiais que pararam todo o Mundo, principalmente no século XX (as duas Guerras Mundiais). De tal modo tornou-se numa nação industrializada e com características propícias a uma atração de populações que buscavam melhores condições de trabalho.

A maior potência mundial, os Estados Unidos, é uma república Federal Presidencialista. Tendo o presidente, eleito pelo colégio eleitoral, como o principal oficial do Poder Executivo. O vencedor é aquele que obtém a maioria dos votos do colégio eleitoral. O atual presidente é Barack Obama, o primeiro presidente negro dos Estados Unidos, para um país que já teve grupos de organização racista como o Ku Klux Klan (kkk), hoje tem se superado e servido como exemplo.
O poder legislativo é composto pela câmera dos representantes e pelo senado. Cada estado tem direito a dois senadores, mais um numero de representantes proporcionais a sua população. O poder judiciário pertence aos tribunais federais e regionais.
Embora a Constituição americana curiosamente sequer mencione a existência de partidos políticos, toda e qualquer decisão política no país, desde a votação de uma emenda no Congresso até a eleição de um presidente, está vinculada ou ao Partido Republicano ou ao Partido Democrata. Os primeiros são mais conservadores do ponto de vista político, institucional e da moral e dos costumes, ao passo que os segundos possuem maior preocupação em relação aos problemas sociais e aos direitos humanos.
